The Boston Terrier is an American-bred gentleman — compact, tuxedo-marked, and charming. Developed in Boston in the 1870s from crosses of Bulldogs and English White Terriers, they were the first non-sporting breed developed in the United States. They are adaptable, intelligent, and friendly companions that do well in cities and with families.

Boston Terriers weigh 4.5–11 kg depending on size classification (under 7 kg, 7–9 kg, 9–11 kg) and live 11–13 years. They have a short, smooth coat requiring minimal grooming, and characteristic bat ears that stand erect naturally.

Brachycephalic and Eye Vulnerabilities

Boston Terriers are brachycephalic — their short muzzle causes airway restriction, heat intolerance, and anaesthetic risk. Their eyes are very prominent due to the shallow orbits in their skull, making corneal injury common. Eye ulcers can develop from minor trauma (face rubbing on carpet, running through bushes). Regular eye checks and protective awareness are important. Avoid neck collars — always use a harness.

Hemivertebrae

Boston Terriers are bred for the corkscrew tail characteristic, which involves a genetic variant causing wedge-shaped (hemi) vertebrae. This same variant can affect the thoracic spine, causing spinal cord compression and neurological signs in severe cases. X-ray screening of breeding stock is recommended.

Congenital Deafness

Like other breeds with white colouring, Boston Terriers have an above-average prevalence of congenital deafness — particularly in dogs with extensive white on the head. BAER (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) testing can confirm hearing status. Deaf dogs can live full lives with appropriate training adaptations.
